February 2022: DIALECT WORKSHoPS

It's been a joy teaching the Irish, Scottish and French dialects to a group of actors in Tasmania over Zoom.

They're mentored and directed by my dear friend, actor Lisa Gormley, and I started working with them in early 2020 before the Covid pandemic hit the world.

At that point, I headed down to Hobart to run an in-person 2 day dialect intensive on General American, Southern American, Standard British and Cockney.
It's been lovely to train them again recently in 3 online workshops - this time the brogues of Ireland and Scotland, and the elegant flow of France.

Many actors find Irish and Scottish a challenge to distinguish in the doing ... and if you haven't spoken any European languages in your life, some of the French dialect sounds are a whole new world!

A lovely few sessions and a joy to see their confidence, craft, versatility and talent grow.

This year I've been teaching dialects all year to NIDA's 2nd Year Bachelor of Fine Arts (Acting) degree students.

It's always fantastic to lead a group through a full year of training and watch them go from first day nerves and newness to the final day's confidence and conviction.

The cohort undertook in-depth training in Modern London, General American and Southern American dialects, then wrapped up the year with a short intro to European dialects with Spanish as the example.

Thanks to NIDA for another successful year of dialect training.

JULY 2020: TEACHING VOICE

I'm deep into a year of teaching Voice to a group of young actors studying a 1 year diploma course in performance for stage, screen and music theatre.

Whenever I lead actors and entrepreneurs through this voice work, it's such an honour to see those who are deeply engaged and committed achieving true transformation. Not only in their career skills, but in their life and self-confidence.

Our voices are a fully embodied expression. Everything shows up in them ... how we think and feel, our beliefs and values, our confidences and fears, our joys and our sorrows, our freedom and our tensions, and much more.

To transform your voice is to transform yourself and your life. And I know from my own lived experience of this work, that you can reach for greater stars! You become freer. I highly recommend it.

MAY 2020: TEACHING VOICE-OVERS

I've been spending the last few months teaching at Australia's renowned National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney.

I'm teaching on two of their full time degrees: with the 3rd Year Bachelor of Fine Arts (Acting) students and the Masters of Fine Arts (Voice) students.

Voice-overs is one of my favourite areas to teach professional actors, but the tools also help entrepreneurs and presenters.

When we open ourselves up to a greater sense of vocal freedom and play, we unlock new areas in our range, delivery options and captivating storytelling. Always a fun day at the office!

It reminds me of the joy I had when working as the Dialect Coach on the feature film "Peter Rabbit". I coached our cast not only in their dialects as the human characters (including Rose Byrne, Domhall Gleeson and Sam Neill), but also some of the voices for the animated characters (including Elizabeth Debicki). Such a wonderful job! Here's the trailer for your listening pleasure.

FEB 2020: TEACHING VOICE-OVERS

Today's Day 1 of teaching a group of 3rd Year Acting degree students in the art of voice-overs and I'm so looking forward to it!

Before I became a coach, I worked for nearly 20 years as a professional actor, musical theatre singer and a voice-overs artist.

I was the voice of brands including NRMA, AMP, Kennards Hire, Prouds Jewellers and many more so it's a joy to pass on the wisdom and experience I've gleaned in the booth and behind the mic.

We're teaming up with the wonderful Casting and Sound Design team at Rumble Studios here in Sydney so the actors will get the highest level of training they can both in class and in the studio.

A fun term planned, we'll be working on commercial reads (soft sells, hard sells, testimonials and more), as well as documentary, audiobooks, character voice, animation and dialects. Talk about joy!

Voice-overs is an incredibly detailed art form. We cover everything from the best vocal play to match the read needs (placement, rhythm, melody, intonation, vowels, consonants etc.), mixed in with brand marketing.

Think of it as voice, psychology and branding ... three of my favourite fields all in one!

What a beautiful way to spend the weekend! I've just come home to Sydney after 3 lovely days in Hobart, Tasmania.

My dear friend and client, actor Lisa Gormley, runs TasCasting (the local casting agency) and also the training school Acting True.

Lisa and I have known each other for years since she starred in "Home & Away" and I was her private Dialect Coach for all her international film auditions.

So of course when she asked if she could fly me down to run a 2 day "Intro to Dialects" workshop, it was a joyous YES!

Two full days exploring 4 accents with 14 gorgeous actors ... General American and Southern American on Day 1, then across the oceans on Day 2 to explore Standard British/RP and Cockney.

Lots of fun and laughter was had, that's for sure!
